Frosty Morning

The South has been in the grip of a deep Winter freeze all this week. The stables have been plagued by frozen hoses, iced-over water buckets, and farm equipment simply refusing to start. Even the boards of the pasture fences were decorated with the etchings of hard frost. Man and beast blew misty clouds with every breath…creating small banks of crystal fog in the early morning air.

While I have never been one to enjoy the cold–I must admit that the effects of all this frost and ice are quite beautiful.  And have inspired my latest work:

Airborne…

Over the Christmas Holiday…I received a card from one of my collectors.  And it really was a wonderful gift because she reminded me that the thing she loved most about my work was that the spirit of the horse had been captured in the painting.

She is right, of course.  The quality that we admire most about these animals is their incredible spirit.  And as I watched them this week running, jumping, playing and just rejoicing in life–I knew that I had to paint that spirit again…

And so I present to you my latest work:

Happy New Year!!

It is only January 5th, but it feels like Spring out there today.  The air is warm, dandelions are poking their heads through the lawn, the camellias are already in bloom, and dark lines of thunderclouds are rolling across the horizon.

It is a good day to stay indoors and get some work done.  Even the horses have gone in early to avoid the showers…

Foiled Again!

I have posted previously about unnecessary safety seals–and here I was today, giving a horse a bath…when I went to open a new bottle of shampoo. Sure enough…there was a safety seal under the cap! Now if you can imagine, I am standing there with a wet horse impatiently stamping and tossing his head, my hands all wet and soapy, trying to wrestle a slippery little foil seal off of a bottle of horse shampoo…

What, in the name of Ceasar’s Ghost….?!?!?

Who, exactly, is facing imminent peril from an “unprotected” bottle of shampoo? I cannot even imagine.  Iwill tell you, though, in another minute I was just gonna let the horse stomp on it–that would get it open, I’m sure….

Another Year Passes…

I don’t know about any of you…but I find that the end of the year is usually a good time to take an inventory of how I have been doing the past twelve months. Truth be told…I don’t think this blog has been going very well.

Instead, I have been spending more time in the “real world” than in Cyberspace.  While this is best for my mental health…it does go against the advice being given to professional artists these days–to survive the current economic situation the “experts” are recommending that artists create an ever larger web presence and to focus on internet marketing.

I don’t know–I guess I just prefer dealing with people face to face instead of through the anonymous black hole of the World Wide Web.

But–for 2009, I will resolve to post more regularly…

Cheers!

O I Have Been Bad About Blogging!

I thought that I would be a bad blogger!  And it turns out that it’s true….

Well, what can I say…my life is just not that exciting.  I do not believe that anyone on this Earth wants or cares to know about { as they said on Seinfeld } “the excrutiating minutae of my everyday life”.

The big news is that Holiday Cards are ready! And for the first time, you will be able to purchase them directly off the website. Orders may be placed starting November 1st.

And a big thank you to everyone who signed up for the  mailing list…Watch your mail-box for information about the upcoming ACA Holiday Party.  As always, there will be discounts on art and gifts for anyone who attends the gallery that evening…

Christmas Decorations Already???…..

Christmas decorations already?!?!

Actually…no.

It is not quite time to trim the tree just yet.., but it IS time for me to get to work on a holiday card design.., so I have pulled out a photograph of downtown Aiken all decorated for the holiday season as inspiration for my work.

I just love beautiful old historic structures like The Aiken Hotel (the large white building on the right)….and I intend to create a romantic city scene to feature on this year’s Christmas Cards. The cards are released every year in the fall.

Last year, of course, my cross-country move caused a delay…and new card designs were not available until after Halloween (YIKES! I know….), but I hope that I can be forgiven for just that one time. This year, barring any major catastrophes, the Horseworks Holiday Cards will be released right on time.

Otherwise, stay tuned here for updates!
